Disney Parades on Postage Stamps
Although Walt Disney is definitely established as an American icon, his name is synonymous with cartoons, animation and delightful characters which capture the hearts and imaginations of children and adults throughout the world. It is, therefore, fitting that so many nations have recreated the Disney images and portrayed the charming, artistic creatures of fantasy on postage stamps. The United States of America released the very first Disney postage stamp in 1968 in a six cent version. Other nations quickly followed suit.
In 1979, the Republic of San Marino released ten postage stamps depicting both the creator, Walt Disney, and various animated characters. Donald Duck had a postage stamp dedicated specifically to his honour by this tiny republic. In 1979, Dominica, Grenada and the Turks and Caicos Islands marked the International Year of the Child through each issuing ten Disney postage stamps. Grenada showed the characters playing a variety of childhood sports. 1981 saw both Anguilla and Grenada Grenadines release Easter stamps portraying Disney images either with Easter baskets or colouring Easter eggs. By 1983, a number of films involving Disney characters were being displayed on postage stamps. Mongolia commemorated the film Fantasia in this same year with a series of stamps with different scenes from the film. The tale Old Christmas brought Disney images to life with Lesotho issuing stamps exposing a series of scenes from the film.
During 1984, Anguilla released ten postage stamps showing Mickey Mouse participating in Olympic decathlon events whereas The Gambia recreated Easter scenes using Disney characters. Togo celebrated Donald Duck’s fiftieth birthday with the release of eleven postage stamps in 1984. His birthday was also marked by Antigua and Barbuda and Maldives with the issuing of eleven postage stamps. Sierra Leone remembered Donald’s special day with ten postage stamps. 1984 was a big year for Donald Duck in the stamp world. In 1985, both Redonda and Mongolia celebrated the stories of the Brothers Grimm through releasing sets of stamps depicting Disney versions of both The Dragon and His Grandmother and The Brave Little Tailor. Belize celebrated the thirtieth anniversary of Disneyland with ten postage stamps showing characters from It’s A Small World in 1985. Bhutan also celebrated this amazing anniversary in 1985 through issuing a series of twelve stamps portraying various Disney characters.
1986 was the fiftieth anniversary of colour animated films and Romania acknowledged the event with ten stamps showing different Disney characters in The Band Concert. In 1988, Bhutan again acknowledged the Disney impact with ten stamps showing Disney characters in Winter Olympics events. Mickey Mouse’s sixtieth anniversary was remembered by Uganda and St Vincent with the release of ten stamps showing Mickey Mouse in Christmas and train scenes.
