The oldest local post in the world was the Paris Petite Post, founded by Renouard de Villayer in 1653. De Villayer, (Master of Petitions) was authorised by a decree of 8th August 1653 to establish the post. The existence of the post is well documented in contemporary literature but it was short lived and no example of any letter transmitted through it has been found.
