Composite stamps in which the design is spread over two or more stamps were first issued by Poland in 1957. Two sixty groszy stamps were printed side by side showing duelling fencers. In June, 1960, Poland issued a set of Olympic stamps in blocks of four different events which, together, made up a complete circuit of the racing track. The first US issue of this kind was a block of four stamps in 1972 depicting the Cape Hatteras National Seashore Park.
