Syria and Egypt joined in February 1958 to form the United Arab Republic. At first, stamps continued to include the word 'Syrie' and for a short time the form 'Republique Arabe Unie' was used, but from the endo of 1958 till October 1961 the stamps were inscribed in English and the simple abbreviation U.A.E. was adopted. The stamps of Syria continued to be different from those used in Egypt, and where a joint issue was made the Syrian version may be identified by the use of the piastre currency, whereas Egypt used milliemes.
