The prepayment of postage in the Falkland Islands was indicated by means of a small handstruck 'franks' used between 1861 and 1877. Adhesive stamps, recess printed, were introduced in June 1878 in denominations of 1,4 and 6d and one shilling. The first printings were on unwatermarked paper but from 1883 onward the colonial watermark was adopted.
