On 11th January 1923, Lithuanian troops seized the port of Memel and expelled the French garrison which had occupied it since 1918 pending a plebiscite to determine its future. Lithuanian stamps overprinted Klapeida (Memel) were introduced in February 1923. In May 1924 the town was formally annexed to Lithuania as an autonomous region, but used ordinary Lithuanian stamps. German troops invaded Memel in March 1939 but since 1945 it has formed part of the Soviet Union.
