Stamp hinges or mounts were invented in 1869. The 1 January 1869 issue of The Stamp Collector's Magazine gave, as a useful tip to collectors (who had previously glued their stamps to the album pages): 'cut up the margin of a sheet of stamps into little strips' and gave a diagram of how the hinges should be folded.
