In 1968 Formosa issued stamps for use on greeting cards at the Lunar New Year and, like the stamps of Hong Kong, Japan and the Ryukyu Islands, took the zodiacal calendar system for its subjects. For the New Year of the Squirrel, a block of four stamps featuring squirrels was issued in a se-tenant formation. Each stamp was a self-contained unit but the four made up a composite design. The stamps, printed in deep-etched multicolour offset, were released in October 1971.
