Shipping Company Stamps PDF Print E-mail
Shipping company stamps, prepaying the postage on mail conveyed by steamships, were first issued in 1847, David Bryce of Trinidad producing a 5c stamp for mail carried by the Lady McLeod between San Fernando  and Port of Spain. Before the formation of the Universal Postal Union in 1874, much of the international carriage of mail was in the hands of shipping companies that produced their own stamps.
