Postage Stamps Used to try to Avert Tax Evasion |

Tax evasion has been recognised as a chronic problem in Italy and, on two occasions, the government has been forced to use postage stamps to encourage a more public-spirited approach among tax payers. In 1954, the 25l stamp, embodying the Italia Turrita motif of the definitive series, signifies 'Everyone must contribute to the public expense'. The following year a similar stamp bore the slogan 'The nation expects a faithful declaration of your income'. Both stamps were released in March, at a time when Italians have to complete their tax forms. Whether the propaganda campaign was successful is not known, but it was never repeated.
