Longest Definitive Series PDF Print E-mail
The longest definitive series to appear in the same year was the American Presidential series of 1938, released between the 25th April and the 8th December. It comprised thirty-two denominations, from half cent to five dollars. The cent and dollar values portrayed each of the twenty-nine presidents from George Washington to Calvin Coolidge, those still living being omitted under the Act of Congress of April 1866 forbidding the portrayal of living persons. The half cent values depicted Benjamin Franklin, Martha Washington and the White House respectively. Up to and including the twnety-two cents denomination each value corresponded with the number of the president - a useful aid in teaching Americans their political history.
