Introduction of Penny Post and the Penny Black PDF Print E-mail
Great Britain was the first country to initiate postage stamps with the introduction of Penny Post and the 'Penny Black' on 6th May, 1840. The ‘Twopenny Blue' was introduced on the 8th May 1840. To prevent falsification or counterfeit operations, these stamps were developed on water-marked paper. Originally, postage on goods had to be paid by the receiver of mail. The problem of people refusing to accept postage caused a major change and the sender became responsible for all postage to ensure delivery. One thing that makes Great Britain’s stamps different to any other in the world is, Great Britain is the only country that does not have the country name on the stamp.
