A colourful set of stamps issued by French Polynesia, in 1983, features hats worn by women of the islands. The one franc 'acacia' hat shows a blend of acacia pods and woven pandanus, decorated with a lei of ripe coconut shell and dried 'mo'u' flowers. The 13 franc 'niau' hat is made from young coconut leaves. The 25 franc 'ofe' hat with 'upea' plait takes on the colour of coffee with milk in warm weather but becomes white in cool weather. The 35 franc 'ofe' hat with 'ope' brim is made from bamboo.
