The first issue of postage stamps consciously commemorative in nature consisted of two 3 cent stamped envelopes, in green or red, released by the United States in May 1876 to celebrated the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. The design showed a horse postman and a train, representing mail transportation old and new, with the dates 1776 and 1876. Quite clearly these embossed stamps celebrated the Exposition, a current event, and the hundredth anniversary of American Independence, a historic event.
