The first adhesive commemorative stamps produced by a government postal administration were those inscribed ONE HUNDRED YEARS issued by New South Wales in 1888 to mark the centenary of the British settlement at Sydney Cove. The series comprised ten values, from one penny to twenty shillings, and though clearly commemorative in inscription and subject matter, the stamps were retained in use for twelve years, undergoing numerous changes in colour, watermark and perforation.
